The Golden West Chapter Takes Home Awards from National Leadership Conference

February 10, 2015

Innovation Award 1
2 Million Dollar Club
Personal Pride Award 2

The National ALS Association Leadership Conference is an annual gathering for volunteers and staff together from across the country to celebrate our heroes living with ALS and focus on our goals for our mission priorities in the New Year.  This year’s event was unlike any other and the Golden West Chapter was honored with several awards for our efforts in 2014.

The ALS Association presented Innovation Awards to chapters that are actively developing and implementing new ideas and/or methods to make an impact.  The Golden West Chapter was one of five chapters to receive this inaugural award, for creating a tool that visually expresses the interconnected nature of our three mission priorities:  Research, Care Services, and Public Policy.  Commonly referred to as "The Wheel", the infographic is used to clearly communicate that each individual element on the continuum is part of an integrated and interdependent system. It demonstrates that everything The Association does is designed to advance the search for effective treatments and a cure for ALS.  The chapter uses this graphic frequently, in print, on our website and during chapter programs and presentations.  This image helps in distinguishing our organization and shares our key strength – we are fighting ALS on all fronts.

The Golden West Chapter’s Walk to Defeat ALS program also took home four other awards for our events in 2014:

The $2 Million Dollar Club Award: This award is presented to chapters who have raised $2 million through the Walk to Defeat ALS in 2014. The Golden West Chapter is one of two chapters in the country to reach this milestone.

Best Walk Day Excitement Award: The Golden West Chapter won the award for the 2014 Los Angeles Walk to Defeat ALS.  The LA Walk was featured by several national media outlets and shows like Access Hollywood, E!, and Entertainment Tonight due to many celebrity attendees walking in support of mega-publicist Nanci Ryder, who had been diagnosed with ALS earlier in the year. THE NBAA: Team Nanci Walkers included team captain, Renée Zellweger and fellow walkers Reese Witherspoon, Emmy Rossum, Elyes Gabriel, Rosanna Arquette, Rose McGowan, Brooke Burns, Katharine McPhee and Kate Linder.

Personal Pride Award: This year, the Golden West Chapter took home this award for the amazing turnout for the inaugural Santa Rosa Walk with the highest percentage of self-donors-75% of the registered participants. This was the highest in the nation amongst all Walk to Defeat ALS events.

Best Team T-Shirt: This award was given to the Golden West Chapter for the incredible efforts of the 2014 Inland Empire Walk Team, "The Beat ALS", led by Team Captain Lyndon Navalta. Walking in memory of Navalta’s father, the team name and shirt design was inspired by his love of baseball and legendary rock band, The Beatles.

Congratulations to our Golden West Chapter participants, staff and volunteers for reaching these milestones in support of our mission!
