Share the Care Program co-presented
with ALS Ohana of Hawaii – July 13, 2014
In 2014, the Golden West Chapter doubled the number of people with ALS that we serve in Hawaii, and we continue to conduct outreach in underserved communities. Terryn Davis, the Golden West Chapter’s Care Manager in Hawaii, made almost 100 home visits and attended more than 20 support groups, meetings and events. Collaboration is key to our success and working with physicians, organizations and volunteers dedicated to the ALS community ensures that we are able to fulfill unmet needs.

ALS Awareness Month – May 2014
Chapter events drive ALS awareness and critical revenue into Hawaii programs and services. In 2014, the Golden West Chapter hosted the 2nd Annual Walk to Defeat ALS on September 6th at Kapiolani Regional Park. Funds from the inaugural Walk helped to establish regional Care Services for Hawaii’s ALS community. Billy V from Hawaiian KINE Radio served as the 2014 master of ceremonies. The event raised over $87,000 and was attended by many participants, including former Walk Chair “Nohea” Naakahiki, Lucy Wedemeyer, loving wife of Hawaii’s football star, Charlie Wedemeyer and Alex O’Loughlin from the CBS television drama “Hawaii Five-0”. Save the date for the 2015 Hawaii Walk to Defeat ALS on Saturday, September 19, 2015.

Hawaii Walk to Defeat ALS®
– September 6, 2014
Unprecedented ALS awareness generated by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge helped new supporters connect with the Golden West Chapter to benefit Hawaii’s ALS community and brought ALS to the forefront of traditional and social media. Foodland’s CEO & Chairman, Jenai Wall and Foodland store employees took the Ice Bucket Challenge using Foodland’s signature reusable grocery bags and Foodland and Sack-N-Save customers were encouraged to support the ALS community by making donations at checkout. Starwood hotel executives and employees took the Ice Bucket Challenge and designated the Golden West Chapter as the beneficiary of their “You Dine, We Donate” program.

Sailing for ALS
Kaneohe Yacht Club – July 21, 2014
In 2014, the Hawaii legislature formally recognized the needs of the ALS community. In May, which is commemorated as ALS Awareness Month nationally, individuals gathered at the Capitol in Honolulu to remember those who lost their battles with ALS. In September, in conjunction with the Hawaii Walk to Defeat ALS, the Chapter hosted a presentation in Waikiki about the National ALS Registry, one of the largest ALS research projects. It is designed to help researchers better understand the risk factors and causes of ALS and assist them in searching for targets for therapies and a cure for the disease.
Five members of Hawaii’s ALS community — Joanne “Cookie” Fujio, Jan Medusky, Victorialei ‘Nohea’ Nakaahiki, Lucy Wedemeyer, and Cheryl Williams — currently hold leadership positions on the chapter’s volunteer board. In 2014, Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator, awarded The ALS Association Golden West Chapter with their highest rating possible — four stars — for a third consecutive year. This coveted designation recognizes our ongoing commitment to sound fiscal management, accountability and transparency.
