An Epic Voyage to Raise Funds and Awareness for ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease

Thirsty- Sailing for ALS

The crew of Sailing for in their 2014 Beneteau First-30 R called “‘THIRSTY"

On July 8th, Charly Devanneaux and Fred Courouble set sail on board their race-prepped 30ft Beneteau First 30R named "Thirsty" for the 2014 Pacific Cup Race, a race for time spanning over 2,000 miles from San Francisco, CA to Kaneohe,HI. Charly and Fred had already raced across the Pacific before, notably in 2011 aboard their Beneteau Frist 40 named "Naos 2" for the TransPacific Yacht Race with their best friend, Gilles.

In early 2012, Gilles was diagnosed with bulbar-onset ALS, and was subsequently unable to welcome his two friends crossing the Pacific for the first time double-handed to Hawaii (Pacific Cup 2012) due to the rapid progression of his disease, which he succumbed to in November of the same year. Charly and Fred decided to honor their friend and benefit the organization that helps people with ALS around the US by racing the Pacific Cup flying the ALS Association's colors and naming their journey "Sailing For ALS".

Thirsty's hull and spinnakers were adorned with the ALS Association's logo and a website was designed as a joint-venture with The ALS Association Golden West Chapter to garner publicity and donations. All donations went directly to the ALS Association's Golden West Chapter in the name of Gilles and SailingForALS.

It took the Thirsty Crew 13 days to travel from San Francisco to Kaneohe and along the way they experienced a variety of conditions: no wind, heavy wind, heavy rain, thunderstorms, debris and garbage in the water, technical difficulties, and exhaustion. By the end of the race, Charly and Fred placed 2nd in their division and 16th in the entire race, they bridged the gap between the Golden West Chapter's Californian and Hawaiian territories, raised awareness of ALS within the sailing community and managed to have Beneteau (by volume, the largest boat manufacturer in the world) sponsor them, and had raised nearly $15,000.

The crew of Thirsty plan to take a break next year, but SailingForALS soldiers on.  The website will remain live and the guys are dreaming up of even more inventive ways of benefiting The ALS Association Golden West Chapter for the Pacific Cup 2016.
