This summer, the Ice Bucket Challenge “soaked” the nation and generated extraordinary awareness about ALS.  One participant, Elyes Gabel, is taking his commitment to a new level at the Los Angeles County Walk to Defeat ALS on Sunday, October 19 at Exposition Park, in downtown Los Angeles.

Gabel currently stars in the highly-rated CBS’ new drama series SCORPION playing the lead role of “Walter O’Brien.” He has previously starred in Paramount Pictures’ WORLD WAR Z opposite Brad Pitt and HBO’s GAME OF THRONES.  Gabel and SCORPION cast mates accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge (Watch their challenge here) from fellow CBS entertainment members NCIS.  After completing the challenge, he decided that he wanted to do more.

“This is a cause that means a lot to me personally,” shared Gabel. “I'm looking forward to participating and helping to raise funds and awareness for the ALS community.”

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.  People with ALS lose their ability to move, speak, swallow and eventually the ability to breathe, while all five senses continue to function normally.  ALS strikes women and men of all ages.  It knows no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries, though military veterans are at twice the risk of the general population.  The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from diagnosis. At this time, there is no known cause and no known cure.

The outpouring of compassion and generosity that has been exhibited through the Ice Bucket Challenge is awe-inspiring,” said Fred Fisher, President and CEO, The ALS Association Golden West Chapter. “This international grassroots movement has also encouraged people to continue the fight to defeat this devastating disease.”

The 12th Annual Los Angeles County Walk to Defeat ALS® will be held on Sunday October 19, 2014 at 700 Exposition Park Drive, Exposition Park, Los Angeles CA. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. with special opening ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. At 11:00 a.m., the Walk will start in front of the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, cross Exposition Blvd., through the beautiful rose garden, before returning to Exposition Park.  The two-mile walk is open to the public and all funds raised support the mission-critical priorities of The ALS Association Golden West Chapter in Care Services, Public Policy, and Research.  This year, the plan was to raise $425,000, but with the heightened awareness about ALS, everyone involved with the Walk is focused on exceeding this goal.  This will be an incredible milestone for the Golden West Chapter in their ongoing efforts to advance the search for effective treatments and a cure for ALS and to serve the diverse, intense needs of the ALS community.  It is this ongoing support that will provide the funding necessary to advance our global research program, our care services program and our public policy initiatives – all of which play key roles in the search for an effective treatment and cure.

About The ALS Association and The Golden West Chapter

The mission of The ALS Association is to lead the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and nationwide advocacy while also empowering people with Lou Gehrig’s disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.  We are a member of the National Health Council and the only National organization solely dedicated to fighting ALS on all fronts while directly serving the ALS community. By leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people with ALS through a nationwide network of chapters, coordinating multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, and fostering government partnerships, The ALS Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure.
