Kevin Heller was a father, husband,
triathlete, West Point alum, and
so much more. He is the
inspiration for Tri to Defeat ALS.
The Lavaman & Tri to Defeat ALS Origin Story
The first ever Tri to Defeat ALS is an incredible story of friendship, challenge, and perseverance. Kevin Heller, our 2021 ALS Association ALS Hero, supporter of the Napa Valley Ride to Defeat ALS and Walk with team #GiveEmHeller, husband, father, triathlete, and West Point alum, was diagnosed with ALS in 2019. Immediately after his diagnosis, he rallied his immense network of family, friends, colleagues and more to get team #GiveEmHeller together for the 15th annual Napa Valley Ride to Defeat ALS and Walk.
Kevin was still competing in triathlons after his diagnosis of ALS and continued to until he was no longer able. He was a true hero and inspiration to so many. One of the triathlons Kevin registered for after his diagnosis was the annual Lavaman Triathlon at Waikoloa Beach, Hawaii. Soon after he was diagnosed with ALS, Kevin reconnected with his college friend and West Point alum, Bruce Babbitt. After ALS took away Kevin’s ability to compete, he decided to gift his Lavaman entry to Bruce, who gladly accepted the challenge. Sadly, Kevin lost his battle with ALS in January of this year. Bruce is now competing in the Lavaman Triathlon on March 28, 2021 in Kevin’s memory, raising much needed awareness and funds for the ALS community.
Now, we come together as a community of triathletes, to raise much needed funds and awareness for this devastating disease.
Together, we will defeat ALS. Join us.
