Why We Need Your Help
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. My father, Clarence "Bully" Nakaahiki, was no exception.
We walk in memory of Bully, who was diagnosed with bulbar ALS in 2006. Bully passed away just four short years later in 2010 at the age of 46 as a result of respiratory distress generated by ALS.
We walk in memory of a courageous father, an amazing husband and an awesome son, brother, uncle and friend who, as a victim of this devastating disease, showed all of us the meaning of courage, determination, strength and the power of faith, as he fought the effects of the disease very day with everything in his power and beyond.
We walk in honor of ALS patients and families here in Hawaii who are going through the same journey. Bully, my mother Nohea, my sister Mahea and I could not have gotten through our journey with ALS without the team of ALS specialists associated with The ALS Association Golden West Chapter and the members of the UCSF ALS Clinic who helped us from beginning to end. My dad was diagnosed with ALS while we were living in California and while we were there, the ALS Association Golden West Chapter provided vital support by helping us obtain communication devices and by providing specialized care through their ALS clinics and support teams in California. They also provided us with publications and materials to help us better understand the disease and learn how to manage the progressive nature of the disease. Most importantly, they provided guidance, support and friendship when we returned to Hawaii and discovered we had lost access to many of the services we had come to rely on while in California.
Hawaii Walk to Defeat ALS is extremely dear to our hearts. Money raised from this particular Walk will help bring in more services needed by Hawaii's ALS community statewide.
Please consider walking with Bully's Warriors. With your help, we will make a difference in the lives of people affected by this disease, especially those living with ALS right here in Hawaii. I encourage you to get your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers involved.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease yet it still costs loved ones an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
