This year we walk in honor of Mike, the father of one of my students, Talia. Here are a few words from her:
"Hey Everyone. I just want to say publicly that my dad is my hero. He was diagnosed with ALS last October and since then has progressed quite rapidly. Despite once being able to do 50 push ups in a sitting, he is stronger now than I've ever seen him. One year later, we are still going strong and fighting this disease! On October 21st my family, friends, and Zumba enthusiasts are walking/dancing to defeat ALS. Please join us on the walk and/or donate to the cause, anything is appreciated."
We started off this effort Marching in the Alameda 4th of July parade to raise awareness for my annual Zumbathon and for the Walk. I do a Zumbathon EVERY year for ALS organizations because of my Uncle Charlie and dear friend Andre Chang. Both were diagnosed at about the same time. I witnessed the toll that this disease takes on the afflicted and vowed I would always do whatever I could to see an end to ALS because no one else should ever have to fight the fight. I also saw how it affected my Auntie Tina, cousins Michelle and Christina, Andre's wife Rose and their two daughter and EVERYONE THEY ALL KNEW. When I learned of Talia's dad, the urgency to raise funds was fueled! Please join us in walking and raising funds... Please also share with everyone you know. We need you!
Why We Need Your Help
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease yet it still costs loved ones an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
