Los Angeles County Walk

Carol's Cohorts

Dear Friends and Family,

I am participating in my 17th Los Angeles County Walk to Defeat ALS in memory of Richard Econn. The Walk is scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 11:00 AM in Exposition Park, in downtown LA, near USC.  It is the largest gathering of people in support of persons with ALS and supports The ALS Association Golden West Chapter’s programs of research, care management, and advocacy.

Recently, I was a guest of Dr. Justin Ichida, Assistant Professor of Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine at the USC Keck School of Medicine, to tour his laboratory at The Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research. Dr. Ichida is a brilliant researcher whose lab - which receives support from The ALS Association, amongst other entities- creates in vitro models of human neurodegenerative diseases by converting patients’ skin cells into disease-affected neural cells. His research enables him to screen thousands of drug-like compounds in search of potential therapeutics that slow or stop the degeneration of these cells in petri dishes — and eventually in patients.

Please continue your support of persons with ALS through your contribution to my Los Angeles County Walk to Defeat ALS team, Carol’s Cohorts.  My goal is to surpass the $10,000 raised last year.  I’ve made my gift of $2,500 to kick off the campaign.  Make your secure donation by selecting my name (down below) or make your check payable to: The ALS Association and put "Carol’s Cohorts" on the memo line and mail to:

Thank you for helping me.

Warmly,
Carol

P.S. I’ll let you know the results of our efforts.

Why We Need Your Help

Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.

Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.

This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease yet it still costs loved ones an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. Help make a difference and donate or join a walk today.
