Why I Ride...
On July 29, 2009, my husband Hal Finney and I started out on a 30 mile bike ride together, to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Hal was fatigued, and we had to shorten our ride. One week later, on August 5, 2009, Hal was diagnosed with ALS. He lived with a very aggressive form of ALS for over 5 years. The disease not only robbed him of his ability to move his arms and legs - it also paralyzed his speech, swallowing, breathing, and finally his eye movement muscles, making him 100% dependent on machines to live, and robbing him of all ability to communicate.
Hal passed away in August of 2014. It has been over six years since Hal died. I feel his loss every day.
ALS is brutal. And there is still no cure, not even a treatment to stop its unremitting progression. I am committed to participating in The ALS Association Golden West Chapter's annual SoCal Ride and Walk to Defeat ALS, whether it be as a virtual rider or at an in person event. I ride to honor Hal. I ride to support those who are currently living with ALS. And I ride to help find treatments and a cure.
What is ALS?
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe.
Why We Need Your Help
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
1. The average life expectancy of an ALS patient is two to five years from the time of diagnosis.
2. Every 90 minutes someone in this country is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease.
3. ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease. Someone you know or love may die from ALS unless a cure is found.
4. Caring for a loved one with ALS costs on average of $200,000 each year.
