The"Strike Out Lou Gehrig's Disease" Tournament Turns 10! | ||||||
The highly successful Strike Out Lou Gehrig’s Disease Tournament hit the decade mark as the Golden West Chapter’s signature youth baseball event. This year nearly 300 players and coaches on 22 teams made the annual trek to Ventura County to help strike out ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease. Opening ceremonies were held on July 24th at California Lutheran University’s Sparky Anderson Field as the 75th Anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s Retirement from baseball was recognized. Among those reading the farewell speech to an appreciative audience was 4-time World Series Champion Jay Johnstone, tournament players, and coaches and players from the California Collegiate League. Exciting games were contested over the next three days with championships going to the Encino All-Stars, Simi Black Sox, and Ventura Elite. The event’s national reputation was helped along by Chris Rose, host of MLB Network’s “Intentional Talk” and coach of the Encino All-Stars, when he featured the tournament as the lead story on his daily show. Donating money towards strike outs pitched and home runs hit was long-time tournament supporter Brent Flynn, owner of Taco Bell franchises throughout California. Brent and his company have generously provided financial and product support since the tournament’s inception in 2005.
