April is National Volunteer Month, and The ALS Association Golden West Chapter is recognizing the important role our volunteers play in enhancing the quality of life for people with ALS, advocating to lawmakers on important issues, and raising money to support ground-breaking research to find treatments and a cure for the disease.

Jared Gill serves as the Co-Chair for the California ALS Advocacy Committee.  In this role, he has helped to lead other volunteer advocates in achieving important outcomes for people living with ALS in California, including the passage of two critical bills: SB 1502, which established the ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease Research Fund on line 414 of  the California tax form to support cutting-edge research, and SB 1503, known as the “Standard of Care for ALS”  for the health and safety code.  Jared also frequently works to influence public policy initiatives at the national level and travels to Washington DC for the National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference.

Jared and his family are also long time supporters and volunteers of The ALS Association Golden West Chapter's efforts within their local community. His family helped to establish the John Gill Central Coast Support Group, which provides monthly services to people living with ALS and their families in the Monterey Bay area.  Every year, you will find Jared inspiring the crowds and serving delicious barbecue at the Monterey Walk to Defeat ALS. He is also a member of our board of directors, currently serving as treasurer.

Janelle Webb started participating in Walk to Defeat ALS events in San Luis Obipso in 2004, when her mother Tara was diagnosed.  She continued evey year until 2009, when she started helping at the Walks in the Bay Area as well. By 2010, she added the Napa Valley Ride to Defeat ALS to her list. "I loved my experience as a volunteer," said Webb. "I got to interact with other families and see how strong they were. I saw how many other people are involved in the fight and are as passionate as I am."

Janelle accepted an internship at the Chapter in 2011. She dedicated hundreds of hours of time answering the phones, supporting care services, helping at events and doing whatever was needed.  "I always knew it was in my life plan to do this because I always wanted to do more than just be a participant of an event. I wanted to learn the inside and see how much they do for people with ALS throughout California."

Janelle and her family have also been willing to share their family’s story with the media to raise awareness. "The Association is a wonderful and passionate group of people working to find a cure. I could not be more appreciative of each one of them. I learned so much from volunteering and will continue to always help in any way I can."
