Baseball Honors Gehrig's Legacy throughout 2012

Throughout July and the 2012 baseball season, The ALS Association Golden West Chapter is participating in and partnering with baseball teams to raise awareness and support for the fight against Lou Gehrig’s disease.

On Tuesday, July 3rd, the Los Angeles Dodgers first basemen, James Loney, invited The ALS Association Golden West Chapter to be a part of his "Loney's Lounge." Buddy Hernandez, Darren Hockersmith, and Mariana Carrillo along with their family members were invited down to the field to watch batting practice and meet James. They were also greeted by familiar Dodger legends, Sweet Lou Johnson and Derrel Thomas. Once batting practice was over, they were able to enjoy the game with field level seats and watched the game.

 2012- 07.04-Fresno Grizzlies 2

On July 4, the Fresno Grizzlies hosted a special evening to to honor the 73rd anniversary of Lou Gehrig's farewell to the New York Yankees and his fans,   Volunteers were on hand to answer questions, give our information about The Chapter and the National ALS registry, and to promote our Central Valley Walk to Defeat ALS

The national "Strike Out Lou Gehrig's Disease" campaign is focused on promoting the ALS registry and spreading awareness about the increased risk to our military veterans. Grizzlies fans were treated to a special camouflage baseball  and a copy of Gehrig's speech to commemorate the evening.  Our Chapter's own Charles Gray was on the field to throw out the first pitch of the game.  He is grandson of Charlie Gray, who is a veteran and has been living with Lou Gehrig's disease for over nine years.

Our thanks to the Grizzlies and to the Fresno community for the efforts to make this such a special day!
