 Dr. Karen DaSilva
2017 Champion of Care

The ALS Association Golden West Chapter proudly announces Dr. Karen DaSilva as the 2017 Champion of Care for the 14th Annual Ventura/Santa Barbara County Walk to Defeat ALS®. The 2 mile walk will be held on Sunday, October 29, at Plaza Park in Downtown Ventura and is open to the public. All funds raised support the mission priorities of the Golden West Chapter in care services, public policy, and research.

Dr. DaSilva will receive the inaugural Champion of Care Award for her extraordinary contributions to the care and support of those many people living with ALS along the Central Coast. She has been with Sansum Clinic since 2011 and has been practicing medicine since 2006. Dr. DaSilva received her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine Medical School. She completed her Internal Medicine internship at Kaiser San Francisco and went on to complete her Neurology residency and Neuromuscular/Clinical Physiology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. DaSilva is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a member of the American Academy of Neurology.

“ALS is a disease that makes one realize how much impact a community can have on the quality of care of an individual,” said Dr. DaSilva. “I am honored to receive this award on behalf of the people with ALS that I care for and their families.”

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.  ALS does not discriminate -- women and men of all ages and backgrounds are at risk, though for unknown reasons veterans are diagnosed with ALS twice as often as civilians.  People with ALS lose their ability to move, speak, swallow and eventually the ability to breathe, while all five senses continue to function normally.  At this time, there is no known cure.

The Ventura/Santa Barbara Walk to Defeat ALS plays an important role in The Golden West Chapter’s efforts to advance the search for effective treatments and a cure for ALS. Since its inception in 2003, the Ventura/Santa Barbara Walk has raised nearly $1.2 million to provide care services for the people with ALS and their families free-of-charge, as well as funding for global research program and important public policy initiatives for the ALS community.

The 14th Annual Ventura/Santa Barbara County Walk to Defeat ALS® will be held on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Plaza Park, in the heart of Ventura. Registration opens at 9:30 am, followed by opening ceremony at 10:30 am and Walk beginning at 11:00 am. The 2-mile walk starts and ends at Plaza Park, wrapping around through the Ventura/Santa Barbara area. This special community event is open to the public and all funds raised support the interdependent mission priorities of The ALS Association Golden West Chapter in Care Services, Public Policy, and Research.  This year’s goal is to raise $125,000 to advance the search for effective treatments and a cure for ALS and to serve the diverse, urgent needs of the ALS community in Ventura/Santa Barbara County.
