The ALS Association Golden West Chapter to honor Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma America, Inc. as a champion in the search for treatments and cures for ALS

September 19, 2019 - San Francisco, California

The ALS Association Golden West Chapter will proudly honor Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma America, Inc. (MTPA) at the 2019 Champions for Care and a Cure celebration on Friday, November 15, 2019 in San Francisco. From the Hyatt Regency San Francisco on the iconic Embarcadero waterfront, this inspirational and informative event features wine tasting, a gourmet dinner, auction, entertainment, and presentation of the Golden West Chapter’s Essey Awards to notable members of the ALS community.

The prestigious Essey Awards, named in honor of one of the chapter’s founding board members, San Francisco’s Richard “Dick” Essey, are given annually for outstanding efforts in support of The ALS Association’s mission priorities in ALS research, care services, and public policy initiatives. The Golden West Chapter will recognize MTPA with the Essey Commitment to Cures Award for its extensive efforts and collaboration on ALS research, development, and education; and its dedication to bring treatments and cures to the ALS community.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative illness that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from diagnosis. As the disease progresses, people with ALS lose the ability to walk, move, speak, swallow and, eventually, to breathe– all while the mind and senses continue to function. Veterans are at twice the risk as those who have not served in the military. Currently, there is no known cause or cure for ALS.

Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma America, Inc. (MTPA) officially launched in the United States in 2016 with the goal of providing therapies for some of the most difficult-to-treat diseases, including ALS. In 2017, the company received regulatory approval for its first U.S. product for treatment of ALS.

“We are extremely honored to receive the ALSA Golden West Commitment to Cures Award,” said Atsushi Fujimoto, President, Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma America. “To be recognized in this way as part of the ALS community means a great deal to our team who are deeply committed to patients and caregivers facing this disease. We are grateful to work towards addressing the unmet needs of this community through our collaborations with the Golden West Chapter and other ALS Association chapters.”

“The Golden West Chapter presents the Essey Commitment to Cures Award to individuals and companies who champion drug discovery and development in the relentless pursuit of treatments and cures for people with ALS and related diseases,” said Fred Fisher, President and CEO of The ALS Association Golden West Chapter. “The leadership and employees of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma America, Inc. are deserving recipients of this award at our 2019 Champions for Care and a Cure celebration. The company’s perseverance in ALS research and therapy development is inspiring and encouraging. We look forward to recognizing them for their generosity, expertise, vision, and community partnership as, together, we fight ALS on all fronts.”

Proceeds from Champions for Care and a Cure will provide funding for The ALS Association Golden West Chapter’s mission priorities in care services, public policy, and cutting-edge global research toward effective treatments and a cure for ALS.
