New public awareness campaign featuring five California families encourages people to voice their love and honor those living with ALS who have lost their ability to speak.

February 11, 2019 —

Celebrities, people living with ALS and two giants from the Silicon Valley software and blockchain industries are challenging the public to say “I love you” in a new social media campaign that’s raising awareness and support for people living with ALS. The #VoiceYourLove campaign, launched today, asks people to create and share video ‘selfies’ expressing their affection for the people that matter in their lives.

The campaign honors those with ALS, including celebrity publicist Nanci Ryder, along with their families, friends, and caregivers. Actors Renee Zellweger and Courteney Cox are among the first celebrities to join the campaign, which is sponsored by The ALS Association and TRON/BitTorrent. TRON Founder and CEO, Justin Sun has already donated $250,000 to the campaign.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Over the course of the disease, people living with ALS lose the ability to move, to speak, and eventually, to breathe. ALS is always fatal, usually within two to five years of diagnosis.

“I’m really excited about this campaign,” said Cox. “I think it’s so important for all of us who have voices to use them to share that love and bring awareness to ALS – and use the voice for the ALS community.”

“We all kind of take for granted that we can tell the people that we love how we feel all the time,” said Zellweger. “But we all have people that we should be saying, ‘I love you’ to.”

“People living with ALS and their loved ones often share with us that losing the ability to speak is one of the most devastating aspects of the disease,” said Fred Fisher, President, and CEO of The ALS Association Golden West Chapter. "The ability to say “I love you” is a gift that is not taken for granted by members of the ALS community. Expressing, sharing and celebrating love for one another is a powerful way to support anyone, especially those living with ALS.”

“I am very grateful to the five families featured in the #VoiceYourLove campaign," said Fisher. "They are all active supporters of the Chapter’s mission. Their willingness to share their stories and the challenges they are facing will help to create a better understanding of ALS. It also highlights the heartfelt courage, connection, and commitment demonstrated by so many in our community, every day and all year long.”

To #VoiceYourLove, The ALS Association Golden West Chapter asks you to follow three simple steps:

1. Using your phone or tablet, record a video message to someone you care for and mention that you are...“Voicing your love in honor of those with ALS.”
2. Post your video to your favorite social media channels and add #VoiceYourLove and @alsagoldenwest
3. Tag your friends and encourage them to join you in the #VoiceYourLove ALS awareness campaign
