Monday, January 17 is the 27th anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. On this day, we celebrate the legacy of the Nobel prize-winning civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, who dedicated his life to others to make a better world for all. The MLK Day of Service inspires hundreds of thousands of Americans to come together to serve their local communities.

Congress designated the holiday as a national day of service and charged AmeriCorps with leading this effort. Taking place each third Monday in January, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service — a "day on, not a day off." This day of service helps to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, address social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

Please watch as the late congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis reminds us of Dr. King's legacy of service and urges all Americans to serve on MLK Day and beyond.

Ways to Participate

The Golden West Chapter is joining in the effort to inspire volunteerism on this national day of service in Dr. King's memory. There are many ways you can participate in the MLK Day of service to benefit the ALS community. In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve."
