Golden West Chapter Leadership has been watching, listening, and joining the world in grieving the tragic and senseless murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and so many others. As a values-driven organization, we wholeheartedly reject hate, racism, and social injustice. We hold ourselves accountable for real action to root out bias in favor of fairness for all. We realize that diversity and inclusivity is only the beginning, and we are committed to anti-racist, anti-oppression positions.
Given this, the Chapter has enacted the following:
The Leadership Team is taking the 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge. Staff members have been invited to join the challenge, or to take it privately, if preferred.
A Chapter staff person trained in social justice is hosting weekly 60-minute drop-in sessions dedicated to open, transparent, conversations about systemic racism, privilege, and related topics. These conversations are being facilitated using methods that promote a safe, affirming environment. The sessions are also a place to process topics for those taking the Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge.
For staff who prefer to learn through reading, the Chapter is purchasing an e-book of their choosing from Claudia Rankine’s Mini-Course On Race in America.
Chapter Leadership has invited BIPOC team members to share experiences, narratives, thoughts, opinions, reactions, and perspectives related to current events, institutions, and systems. The details and planning of conversations will be tailored to the preferences of the staff member. The goal is to create clear pathways for voices to be heard without burdening BIPOC staff with the added task of educating those with privilege.
It is anticipated that these early actions will organically create new opportunities to promote, support, and participate in solutions and next steps in addressing the systemic inequities in our society.
