It was on July 4, 1939 that Major League Baseball legend Lou Gehrig stood before his loyal fans at Yankee Stadium and declared himself to be, “The luckiest man on the face of the earth.” It was on that day that so many Americans first became aware of a disease that few had heard of before – amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – which would thereafter be known to millions as "Lou Gehrig’s Disease" in remembrance of the beloved Hall of Famer. He died less than two years after that famous farewell speech on June2, 1941.
The ALS Association has been on the forefront of research, care services, and public policy initatives since it was formed in 1985, and is committed to search for effective treatments and a cure for ALS. Every year, we join with our friends and partners in the baseball community, to remember Lou Gehrig and to participate in events to raise awareness about ALS to thousands of baseball fans. This year, you can celebrate Lou Gehrig's legacy and help fight ALS at one of these fun baseball games near you!
