Hawaii's Governor Ige Proclaims May ALS Awareness Month

 Hawaii’s ALS community gathered
for Governor David Ige’s
ALS Awareness Month Proclamation

During the month of May, the ALS community in Hawaii will be celebrated and remembered as a part of National ALS Awareness Month.

The month began with Governor David Y. Ige issuing a Proclamation in which May was designated ALS Awareness and ALS Families Appreciation Month in Hawaii. The Proclamation was read in the Executive Chambers of the State Capitol to a standing room only audience of people living with ALS, caregivers, families, friends and supporters.

The ALS community looked on as Steven Vidinha accepted the Proclamation from Governor Ige and shared a poignant message about his journey with ALS. Steven stressed the importance of community support and having access to care services. To express his appreciation, he offered Governor Ige a Hawaii Walk to Defeat ALS T-shirt on behalf of the Golden West Chapter and invited him to join his team. Governor Ige eagerly displayed the T-shirt while Steven continued his talk explaining how, following diagnosis, he has gone from feeling isolated and lonely to becoming an advocate to create more awareness about ALS.

Board Member Jan Medusky & Governor Ige

Golden West Chapter Board Member Jan Medusky
thanks Governor Ige for helping to create more
ALS awareness in Hawaii

Also in attendance was Jan Medusky, member of the Golden West Chapter’s Board of Directors. Jan supported his wife Vi’s through her seven year battle with the disease before she died in 2011. Jan spent a few moments with Governer Ige expressing his appreciation and sharing the impact of the Chapter’s services coming to Hawaii.

Following the ceremony, the group gathered for pictures and expressed their “mahalos” for making a formal acknowledgement from the highest level of Hawaii State Government on behalf of the ALS community. You can view the pictures here on our Flickr channel.

The Governor’s Proclamation ceremony is the start of a month filled with many activities throughout the state. On Saturday, May 14, Best Life Ever Coach, Kimi Morton, will inspire and uplift the community as she shares her experiences as a caregiver, support group leader, and life wisdom. To register or for more information, please contact Terryn Davis, Care Manager at 808-597-6416 or The Mayors of the various counties of Hawaii have also joined the movement and will be giving Proclamations in their respective communities. We look forward to continuing the conversation about the importance of ALS awareness and advocacy and what the ALS Association Golden West Chapter brings to the Hawaii ALS community.

On Friday, May 27, there will be a sign waving “mahalo” campaign at the Hawaii State Capitol starting at 4:30 pm. Following that, we will have an ALS Memorial Service in the Capitol Rotunda at sunset. The service honors those who we have lost to ALS. As each name is read, a family member or friend will present a flower to be added to our lei of remembrance.

While we celebrate ALS Awareness Month, we remain focused on keeping the needs of the ALS community in the forefront and providing services through our multidisciplinary ALS clinic, support groups, workshops, advocacy, and care services.
