Community invited to the 3rd Annual SoCal Ride to Defeat ALS on

Sunday, May 04, 2019 to support the search for effective treatments and cures for ALS.

04/20/2019–Newbury Park, CA

The ALS Association Golden West Chapter is hosting the 3rd Annual SoCal Ride to Defeat ALS and Trail Run/Park Walk on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Dos Vientos Park in Newbury Park, California. This annual event brings incredible energy and an outpouring of support for those affected by ALS. Registered participants are invited to join other members of the community for a family-friendly morning of celebration, exercise, education, awareness, music, food, and kids’ fun. This event is open to the public, and all funds raised support the mission priorities of The ALS Association Golden West Chapter in care services, public policy, and research. We invite you to be a part of a fun-filled, family-friendly event supporting the ALS community!

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal, neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. People with ALS lose their ability to move, speak, swallow and eventually the ability to breathe, while all five senses continue to function normally. ALS can strike anyone, at any time. It knows no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries, though military veterans are at twice the risk of the general population. The average life expectancy of a person with ALS is two to five years from diagnosis. At this time, there is no known cure.

Co founders Dawn and Niall Foley at the starting line

"The ALS community, now and in the future, will benefit from your efforts! For me, I know this journey would not be possible to navigate without the love and support of my family, my fire family, my friends, and the incredible ALS community," shared Niall Foley, a retired Glendale firefighter who was diagnosed with ALS in 2015. Niall serves as Co-Chair for the SoCal Ride to Defeat ALS with his wife of 27 years, Dawn Foley.

Online registration is available through Tuesday, April 30 at www.socalride.org, and walk-in registration opens at 7:30 am at the park on Saturday, May 4, followed by staggered start times depending on the route. Every participant can count on support from start to finish with rest stops, SAG (support and gear) vehicles, and route monitors. Upon completing the tour, riders and walkers will be welcomed back by cheering crowds and finish line festivities that include live entertainment, a delicious BBQ lunch, and more.

The 2019 SoCal Ride to Defeat ALS and Run/Hike/Walk is proudly sponsored by Stanley W. Ekstrom Foundations, Cryptograffiti, Quantum, Superior Mobility, Ability Works, Rusnak Auto Dealership, and True Care Hospice. KOST 103.5FM Host, Mark Wallengren, will serve as our event emcee with a live band during the event’s finishing ceremonies.

The mission of The ALS Association is to discover treatments and cures for ALS and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest. The Golden West Chapter serves people with ALS and their families in 31 counties throughout California and in the state of Hawaii. Everything we do advances the search for effective treatments and cures for ALS.
